Arthritis Hands Symptoms - Initial Symptoms of Arthritis of Hands

Each hand is made up of 25 bones involving joints in fingers as well as the wrist. Any ailment of the hands leads to difficulty in performing routine functions such as gripping, holding etc. and could also lead to deformity.

Arthritis in hands causes inflammation, swelling, stiffness, pain etc. The two main types of arthritis are:

Osteoarthritis - This occurs generally in older people and pain gradually increases over a period of time. The padding or the natural shock absorbers of the hands - the cartilage is affected, causing pain, restricting movements and reducing strength.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - This is a more severe form and unlike Osteo, the location of pain in the body cannot be predicted. The effect is not only on joints but also on muscles, tendons and other tissues of the body.

Symptoms -

1- Pain - Initial symptoms include pain in hands with a burning sensation. It increases when the hands are stressed with activities like lifting weight, writing, knitting or any continuous and regular movement. Pain becomes so severe that at times, one cannot even sleep at night. Pain increases in humid weather and even small activities such as opening a lock or opening a jar in the kitchen are also hampered.

2- Swelling- with pain, if stress continues for a longer period of time, swelling is caused and restricts

further joint movement.

3- Stiffness- With persistent pain, the stiffness increases. Also, it is more in the mornings and in colder climate.

4- Warmth- The affected joint may feel warm when touched.

5- Increased mobility of other hands- The hands surrounding the affected one may feel more mobile than normal.

6- Cysts - Small cysts may form on the knuckles especially at the end.

7- Deformity- In advanced stages, continuous swelling may cause shape change. Also, the joint may feel loose and crippled. The basic structure of the joint may become weak.

Arthritis - Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies, Arthritis Symptom and Other Treatments

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. It can occur anywhere in the body and, based on that, there are several types of arthritis. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis which is the common ailment of pain in the joints observed in elderly people. Other common types of arthritic ailments are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

The word arthritis is derived from two root Greek words - arthros meaning 'joint' and it is meaning 'inflammation'. Hence, arthritis literally translates as inflammation of the joints.

Arthritis is an auto-immune disease, which means, it is a disease in which the human body attacks itself. It begins in one or two joints where an acute pain is felt. This is the most miserable phase of arthritis. Over time, this pain may disappear, but it could cause permanent deformities in the bones and joints.

Why is Arthritis caused?

Different types of arthritis are caused due to different reasons.

(1) Osteoarthritis - Osteoarthritis is a common old-age problem, which affects several people who have crossed the age of 40 years. In people with osteoarthritis, the bones may increase in size at their articulating points. As a result the spaces between them in the joints become less. When moving about, there is a high probability that different bones will rub against each other. This is the cause of osteoarthritis.

(2) Rheumatoid Arthritis - Rheumatoid arthritis is a more serious problem than osteoarthritis because it can occur at any age. In people with rheumatoid arthritis, the ligaments and tendons between the joints undergo degeneration. This causes severe pain where the degeneration has taken place. Common rheumatoid arthritis pains are felt in the fingers; but other places like the wrists, hip and knees are also affected. Rheumatoid arthritis is responsible for deformation of the fingers.

(3) Septic Arthritis - Septic arthritis is a special type of arthritis which is caused when the joints get infected.

(4) Gout - Gout is common old-age arthritis. It is caused when crystals of uric acid are deposited in the spaces between the joints. This type of arthritis is linked with faulty digestion.

What are the Symptoms of Arthritis?

In all types of arthritis, the following symptoms are observed:-

  • The initial pains are felt as fleeting pains in the joints, which seem to be no more than a twitching pain.

  • Pains alternate between various joints quickly.

  • If the arthritis becomes acute, then on a particular day there is very sharp pain in a joint, and it becomes absolutely normal the next day. The next day another joint could be affected in a similar fashion.

  • The pains could increase in the winter season or in cold nights.
  • How can Arthritis be avoided?

Arthritis cannot be avoided effectively as it is a common ailment that occurs with advancing age. One must learn to live with the problem. But there are various things which can be avoided in order to keep arthritis at bay.

The following foods must be avoided if you have continuous arthritic pains:

  • Animal fats

  • Fried foods

  • Foods rich in carbohydrates like potatoes

  • Tomatoes

  • Peppers

  • Salt
  • Simple yogic asanas and light exercise helps proper digestion of the body and also protects it from autoimmune problems. Hence, these are beneficial in arthritis.

If you have recurrent pains in the joints, then do not keep the joint covered. As far as possible, keep the joint exposed to the air. For example, if you have pain in the knee joints, then do not wear tight denim clothing; shorts would be a good idea. This will provide freer circulation of blood in the joint and reduce the pains.

How can Arthritis be controlled with Simple Home Remedies?

Some household remedies are known to provide relief from arthritic pains. The following are some of the more benefiting ones:-

  • Applying a paste of limestone and honey on the affected joints externally provides relief.

  • Mash some mustard in warm water and apply this solution on the joints. This must be done repeatedly to get results.

  • Put two teaspoons of cumin into a glass of water. Bring this to a boil. When the water is still hot, soak a towel in it and foment the affected region with this towel. This will provide relief from the pain within a few hours.

  • Asafetida mixed with egg yolk can be applied on the affected joints to seek immediate relief.

  • Prepare a pancake from wheat flour. Roast it on one side, but leave it uncooked on the other. Then put some heated mustard oil on the uncooked side. When it is hot, tie it like a tourniquet on the affected joint, or provide fomentation with it. This provides quick relief.

  • Mix some cardamom in milk. Put a pinch of turmeric in this milk. This is to be drunk every night while going to sleep. This makes the person sleep peacefully in the morning.
  • Acute Arthritis - How To Prevent Permanent Joint Damage

Acute arthritis is also known as Bacterial Arthritis and as the name would indicate, it is a form of arthritis that is caused by a bacterial infection. All parts of the body are susceptible to this form of arthritis, however, hips, knees, and hands are the most common sites to suffer an acute arthritis attack. This article shares the symptoms, cause, and how this condition is diagnosed. It will also share what treatment is needed to avoid permanent damage to your joints.

    Acute Arthritis

Symptoms - Symptoms of this condition may include the onset of a fever with chills. A person afflicted with this form of arthritis may also notice red, swollen, and painful joints that make movement difficult.

Cause - Acute arthritis is caused by an invasion of bacteria (i.e. streptococci or staphylococci) into the joint. The bacteria may spread from an infection elsewhere in the body or on the skin near the joint. In some cases, direct trauma to the joint may allow bacteria to enter and cause damage.

Diagnosis - Observation of the aforementioned symptoms will be noticed and should be evaluated by a physician. The evaluation may include a physical examination, blood tests or analysis of fluids withdrawn from the joint. In some cases x-rays of the joint will be taken to further evaluate the situation.

Treatment - If diagnosed and treated early, this condition is curable with antibiotics. If treatment is delayed, this may result in permanent damage to the joint. The joint may have to be immobilized during treatment to promote healing, and physical therapy may be necessary after healing to restore full mobility to the joint.

Acute arthritis can develop quickly, often within hours or days and can be seen in children or adults. The condition can cause moderate to severe pain in the joint that is effected. Prompt medical attention is needed to prevent permanent damage to the joint.

Arthritis - Foods That Harm, Foods That Heal

Two of the most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

People suffering with osteoarthritis should avoid or cut down on highly refined and processed foods, sugar, salt and saturated animal fats. A healthier diet would be to include wholegrain cereals, fresh fruit and vegetables. By eating a more healthy diet sufferers can boost their immune system and provide them with extra energy they need to fight the disease.

Through scientific research, it has been shown that fish oils are beneficial to people suffering from arthritis. Oily fish such as salmon, mullet, sardines and trout provide the omega-3 fatty acids that can have an anti-inflammatory effect. Inflammation is the natural body's reaction to arthritis resulting in pain, swelling, redness and heat. For people who cannot eat fish, fish oil capsules or liquid taken in the prescribed dose can help in managing the disease.

Seafood provides omega-3 fats which help to regulate the body producing inflammatory chemicals known as eicosanoids. As well as seafood, canola oil, soy oil, flaxseed and walnut also provide omega-3 fats which help to suppress the inflammatory chemicals.

Some studies have found that rheumatoid arthritis sufferers have benefited from a vegetarian diet. Celery and ginger contain an anti-inflammatory agent and celery and bananas are a good source of potassium. Green vegetables should be included in the diet as they are a good source of beta carotene, calcium, iron, folate and vitamins.

Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain that is effective in breaking down protein. Researchers have been looking into the medicinal properties of bromelain since the mid 1950's. It has been used in treating the inflammatory symptoms of both Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis and it thought to aid in tissue repair.

Healthy eating habits essential for our total wellbeing, but when diseases such as arthritis are evident, what you eat can be extremely important for your immune system, blood circulation, weight control and of course nutrition. The following dietary guidelines may help with choosing foods that assist the body to repair itself.

o Maintain an ideal weight by eating a variety of foods. Include foods from the 4 basic food groups (fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, breads and cereals) to ensure the intake of the more than forty essential nutrients to maintain good health.

o Include adequate amounts of starch and fiber. Starches such as potatoes, rice, bread, beans and pasta provide the body with energy. Fiber, the undigested portion of the plants we eat, adds bulk and helps with the elimination process.

In some cases of rheumatoid arthritis, it is thought that food intolerance and allergies may contribute to the disease. It can be extremely difficult discovering what, if any, food could be the culprit and an exclusion diet may be the best way to identify the allergy source. For anyone considering following this type of diet, they should first consult their medical professional or qualified dietician.

A number of foods that are believed to exacerbate arthritis or are associated with arthritis "flare ups" are -

    o Caffeine

    o Red Meat

    o Dairy products

    o Processed foods

    o Sugar

    o Salt

o Vegetables of the nightshade group (tomatoes, peppers, etc.)

    o Preservatives and additives

    o Chocolate

As with many allergy triggers the effects are not always consistent with everyone, what triggers a flare up or allergy on one person may have no affect on another.

o Avoid too much sugar. Sugar provides calories but little nutrition and too much will contribute to excess weight gain.

o Avoid too much sodium. Excess salt can contribute to water retention and also lead to high blood pressure.

o Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can deplete the body of vitamins and minerals besides being high in calories. It also potentially can interact with medications for arthritis and in some cases can be extremely harmful when mixed with prescribed and non prescribed medications.

The overall aim is to reduce the causes of arthritis pain and discomfort by ensuring the foods you eat are right for your condition and are not harming your body further.

Herbal Remedies for Arthritis: An Option To Consider

Many now are willing to consider herbal remedies for arthritis as they wish to reduce their reliance on using drugs. Herbal remedies for arthritis have been highly recommended by natural health experts.

Some of the herbs which are said to be effective for reducing inflammation and for pain relief include Chinese Thunder God Vine, feverfew, cat's claw, willow bark extract, and stinging nettle.

Reports also show that ginger and willow bark extract are effective herbal remedies for arthritis. Their only drawback is that they contain chemicals that are similar to conventional NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-Inflammatory compounds). The NSAIDs as drug compunds produce a few side effects. For example, they may cause inflammation of the stomach lining and intestines. If you ingest a substantial amount, they can also interfere with blood clotting or cause fluid retention.

Because of these reasons, they are considered harmful for those with high blood pressure or with heart diseases. In comparison to ginger and willow bark extract, Chinese Thunder God Vine seems to be better herbal remedies for arthritis as they can also relieve pain and joint inflammation quite well. However, it is best that they are not used over a prolonged period. Consuming too much may lead to osteoporosis.

Herbal remedies for arthritis can be brewed in the form of cleansing teas or soups. For the herbs, you can get them at a herbal store. Ask the herbalist to mix a concoction for you. Herbs come in different grades. You should always choose the best quality ones for your arthritis.

Traditional Chinese Medicine or Ayurveda Medicine also recommends boiling herbal remedies for arthritis to serve as a tonic soup or drink. You will need to consult a practitioner as he can then examine you and prescribe a preparation based on your specific condition. You will need to consume herbal remedies for arthritis over a period of time before you can feel any positive effects from them.

Herbal remedies for arthritis can also be consumed as a supplement. Just visit any vitamin supplement store to get them. Do ensure that you stick to recommended dosage instructions.

Herbal remedies for arthritis are worth considering especially if you wish to explore alternative methods to finding pain relief. Do ensure that your herbs do not interfere with drugs that you are taking for other medical conditions as well. Be sure to check with your doctor first.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Smoking - Evidence That Smoking Increases Your Risk

    Smoking or nonsmoking?

How many times have you been asked that question when you entered your favorite restaurant?
If you answered nonsmoking, you are directed to a smoke-free area where you can eat your food without the rancid smell of smoke to truly enjoy the flavor of your food. After all, you pay hard-earned money to go and enjoy a meal. You don't want someone else's smoking to interfere with your evening. Hopefully you will continue to choose the nonsmoking section because studies show that smoking increases your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, as well as many other different medical difficulties.

It used to be smoking was allowed in every public place, but that's simply not the case anymore. There are some states that ban smoking in public gathering places. Despite the money that is made from smoking, cities and states are banning together to read the facts about smoking and don't wish to remain vulnerable for potential lawsuits. The health industry is becoming quite successful at relaying the health hazards associated with smoking. You want the facts, right? Well, let's discover what smoking does to your body.

    Smoking gives you...

    - An empty wallet

    - Bad breath

    - Breathing difficulties

    - Frequent colds and coughs

    - Lung cancer

    - Medical difficulties

    - Prison-like addictions

    - Risk of infections

    - Smelly clothes

    - Yellow fingertips and teeth

How can smoking make my rheumatoid arthritis worse?

Statistics show that cigarette smoking causes 87% of lung cancer deaths. Smokers are about twice as likely as a nonsmoker to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. If you already have rheumatoid arthritis, smoking can make the disease and pain worse. Smokers with rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to develop complications of rheumatoid arthritis that affect parts of the body other than joints than nonsmokers.

    What is rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis causes chronic inflammation and degeneration of the joints, especially the fingers, hands, shoulders, knees, feet, and ankles. It is easily recognizable by swollen joints, by x-rays revealing erosion around the affected joints, and by the presence of antibodies in the blood known as the rheumatoid factor.

    What does rheumatoid arthritis cause?

Rheumatoid arthritis causes many medical deficiencies such as:

    - Anemia

    - Crippling pain

    - Fatigue

    - Fever

    - Stiffness

    - Swelling

    - Uncontrollable weight loss

How can smoking cause rheumatoid arthritis?

Researchers aren't positive of the reason why smoking increases rheumatoid arthritis, but they are sure that smokers have worse rheumatoid arthritis than nonsmokers. The more years and more frequently you've smoked can dramatically increase your chance of worsening the symptoms of your rheumatoid arthritis.

How many people are afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis?

About 2.9 million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

Which gender is more susceptible to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis?

Women are two to three times more susceptible than men to be diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.

At what age do people acquire rheumatoid arthritis?

The typical age that people get rheumatoid arthritis is between the ages of 25-50.

Waiting For a Diagnosis? 9 of the Most Deadly Words When Facing Lupus & Other Inflammatory Diseases

"I'm Waiting for My Diagnosis Before I Do Anything."

It astonishes me how many times subscribers to my Healing Auto Immune Disease Newsletter tell me they are not doing anything to help themselves, until their doctor labels them! Is it lupus, fibromyalgia, arthritis, or a long list of other potential disease 'labels', all of which are inflammatory issues that have simple, common sense, safe, no cost solutions to help start the healing process!! This, all the while experiencing painful, even debilitating autoimmune symptoms such as severe fatigue, muscle pain, extreme joint pain/arthritic symptoms, fever, migraines, skin rash, hair loss, kidney issues, (etc).

The first line of defense should never include a 'wait and see what your diagnosis is' approach.

The first line of defense should include an immediate, full out attack on anything that creates inflammation! For example, a lupus diet (anti inflammatory) has shown drastic improvements for most, as do many supplements aimed at realigning the immune systems faulty 'attack' message. These are 2 of the most powerful and simple steps one suffering from an inflammatory disease can do.

Only you, not your physician, must take full responsibility for your health!

Unfortunately, the diagnosis of lupus (and other related autoimmune issues) often take months, more commonly years to diagnose, all the while a simple, natural, and effective healing protocol could have been initiated. Add to this the possibly of avoiding unnecessary hospital visits, future meds, reducing the need for current ones, and avoiding serious, often devastating side effects from prescription drugs and worsened symptoms.

Start a healing regime with natural common sense solutions to wellness that include (but not limited to):

Body- The right food/nutrients that support the healing process with lupus diet do's and don'ts, ensuring healthy digestion and absorption of food particles, supplementation, eliminating toxins, promoting an alkaline internal terrain, etc.

Mind - Stress reduction, Eastern Healing strategies, Self-Healing Visualizations, Power of the Mind/Attitude etc.

Spirit - Faith, Prayer, Meditation, Support from loved ones

    ...with immediate implementation!

Each of the above is a safe, natural, common sense approach that supports the body in the healing process. (Of course, get the approval of your health specialist with any change to your diet or lifestyle).

As you blast the fire of disease with everything at your disposal, have your team of experts (hopefully this includes a naturopath or alternative health expert in the mix) help you identify the root culprit so you can further target it, once it's been found.

For some it's food/digestion related, for others it's environmental/toxin related, or perhaps it's acute and/or chronic stress (as it was with me), or even meds known to trigger lupus. Many people never find the root cause of their symptoms, yet by implementing the right healing protocol still improve, if not reverse their symptoms.

In the meantime, minimize the fire and keep it from spreading!

Far too many people's 'wait and see' position leads them straight into avoidable flares, even worse, serious long-term health consequences. The sad news is it could have been prevented, or at minimum significantly reduced with a pro-active, common sense natural approach to healing.

Please note, this is not to say there aren't issues specific to disease. Of course there are. However, getting on a natural, healthy protocol is in your favor. Get off the culprits that are known to be harmful to health. White foods (sugar, salt, flour, dairy), fatty foods, processed foods, and alcohol, are just a few common sense 'diet don'ts'.

Fact: The foundational principles for healing is 85% the same for all disease. Therefore, why wait for a label?

Most doctors aren't taught healing methodology. They're expertise is in disease, the diagnosis of it, and utilization of prescription drugs for a symptomatic, treatment approach that suppress symptoms versus heal the root cause. Symptom suppression can be very helpful at times and over short term, however this paradigm is a non-curative approach.

In fact, serious legal issues are now associated with people or institutions making 'curative' claims (even if claims are scientifically substantiated). Recently I was excited to hear a claim from a Canadian University, whose research had found the answer to a common and prevalent deadly disease, only to be silenced, facing potential legal charges despite evidence in their favor.

'Come Back When You're Worse and I'll Put You on Steroids'
When I had lupus and went for my first visit to the Rheumatologist I asked 'What I can I do to help myself heal?' Her response: 'Nothing, come back when you're worse and I'll put you on steroids'.

Swallowing my rage, I then decided to be a bit more specific and asked 'Are there certain foods I should eat or avoid?' I was told 'Eat whatever you like, it makes no difference'. On my third and last attempt to get some identifiable form of support I asked 'Is there something I can do to avoid flares?' to which I was told 'You told me you read a book on lupus didn't you, didn't that answer any of these questions?'

I won't mention my immediate following thought, other than the second one that internally declared I wasn't going to spend my life with lupus, let alone visit this particular 'specialist' again! I have had countless other lupus sufferers complain of the same, irresponsible, unprofessional, and unhelpful response.

The above experience many of us have had with 'Specialists' isn't to say that there aren't doctors who haven't reached outside the medical model and educated themselves in natural, alternative healing protocol. There are countless who have, and are regularly reporting reversing lupus and other serious disease.

The unfortunate thing is they are the exception to the norm, and accessing information is like being on 'the inside' of a well known, but not highly publicized, alternative health movement. It's there, but you need to find it outside of regular channels.

'Many of my patients with autoimmune illnesses (such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and hyperthyroidism) are able to recover and throw away their medications.'

(On healing disease:) 'The result is so spectacular that I am subjected to skepticism and even periodic expressions of anger from other physicians.'

    Dr. Fuhrman

Healing Lupus and Autoimmune Disease From the Inside Out, Versus a Treatment Approach That Medicates From the Outside In

If diet matters when we're not ill, it certainly matters even more when we are! In addition, drugs don't cure. They suppress symptoms. They also block the digestive capacity of nutrients, which make it even more difficult for the body to begin to heal. It's a downward spiral effect, where the side effects of drugs often only add to the original problem and often exceed it!

Nutrients, stress, toxins, attitude, all potentially inflammatory, are in our control when we take it upon ourselves to act on it. Our health is NOT in our doctor's hands, it's in ours!

If we sit around and wait for a diagnosis we are victims. Unfortunately, adding insult to injury, sitting around waiting for your doctors diagnosis often leads only to prescription drugs, not to a healing protocol that has the potential to make the quality of your health, and life, a healthy one. Don't wait for a label to start a healing protocol.
